The Project
When Haveley Hey Community School in Wythenshawe appealed for local construction firms to help create a new outdoor classroom and sensory garden for its pupils, O’Grady Construction stepped forward and delivered all groundworks completely free of charge.
The school is home to one of the highest numbers of looked-after children in Manchester, alongside a significant proportion of pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The new outdoor learning space was designed to support the emotional and mental health of both children and their families.
O’Grady Construction’s Contribution
- Site preparation and bulk excavation
- Formation of the outdoor classroom base and surrounding hard-standing
- Preparation of sensory garden areas and activity zones
- Earthworks to create landscape mounding for outdoor learning
- Drainage and finished ground levels throughout
About the School
Haveley Hey Community School serves one of Wythenshawe’s most challenging communities. The project was designed around the five senses, with breakout tables for smaller group activities, a large outdoor shelter for whole-class use, and a fire pit. Environmental features include a sedum green roof, bee and bug hotels, owl habitats and a water recycling feature.
